Moot Court

As an activity, Mooting is a unique way of preparing for legal practice. However, the skills of research and advocacy that are developed by Mooting are essential not only for life in the legal field, but for success in a whole range of disciplines. The ability to prepare and present an oral argument will stand to participating students in pursuing, and achieving in, their chosen careers.

Matheson Ormsby Prentice Moot Court Competition

The Moot Court Competition is an exciting new addition to the Law Society’s activities. A Moot Court is a debate on points of law arising from a hypothetical appellate case, using the formalities and procedures of an actual court. The benefits from participation are numerous.

The 80th Session will hold the 3rd Annual Moot Court Competition. Last year, the winners of the competition, Mr. Marcus Walsh and Mr. Aengus ó Corráin, went on to win the Holland & Knight Intervarsity Moot Court. This win means that UCC are going for a 'three-in-a-row' this year due to the fact that, UCC's Mr. Eoin Daly and Mr. Ger Sadlier won the Holland & Knight competition in 2008. Given the quality of the orators who have represented our University to an exceptionally high standard in forums throughout the world, the Law Society has an opportunity to further its reputation by building on this success. Through the creation of a new position, that of Moot Convener, the Law Society has dedicated itself to this purpose.

The Moot Court Competition is open to students of all years and there are also plans to organise an ancillary competition which will be solely open to First Year students.

This year's Moot Court Competition is kindly sponsored by Matheson Ormsby Prentice.
