Some people see the word debate, and scream and run away! However our weekly House Meetings are all about giving students an opportunity to hear high profile speakers debate or speak on a particular topic and also to let students voice their own opinions on such issues. However, if public speaking isn’t your thing, then you can just listen!
Our House Meetings take place on Wednesday evenings at 7pm in Kane G19. We have some very renowned personalities at these meetings and debates have been known to be quite interesting and entertaining on occasion! Some of last year’s guest speakers included RTÉ’s Ryan Tubridy and Mark Little; Senator Eoghan Harris; ‘solicitor to the celebrities’ Gerald Keen and Sinn Fein’s Martin Ferris, to name but a few.
House Meetings begin with the minutes as read by our Recording Secretary (aka our ‘Resident Stand-Up Comic’), Mr. Cormac Gilroy. The minutes consist of a tongue-in-cheek account of the week’s events and it is important to remember that no-one’s nocturnal antics will escape the wrath of the minutes!
The Meeting then turns to its specific subject of that evening whether it is a guest address, a debate on a particular topic or a themed event, such as Blackboard Jungle. Some of the House Meetings planned for this year include debates on: “Re-Introduction of College Fees”, “The Irish Language – A Soon-to-be Extinct Specie?” and “That This House Would Lower the Legal Age for Drinking”.
If you have any suggestions for House Meeting topics then you can contact our Internal Convener, Mr. Barry Murphy.
