To mark the historic 80th Session of the Law Society, we are delighted to announce that we will be hosting the Gerald Goldberg Memorial this Thursday, March 4th.

Gerald Goldberg was the first speaker of the Law Society, eighty years ago, and was to become a leading figure in Irish legal and political life. He was to become Deputy President of the Law Society under the Presidency of Mary O’ Connor in the early 1930’s and later President himself.

As a solicitor, he led a criminal practice in Cork and then became President of Incorporated Law Society of Ireland. He was elected Alderman of Cork City Council in 1967 and was renowned as the first Jewish Lord Mayor in 1977. Within this role, he was awarded the Freedoms of Philadelphia, New York and Dallas and was awarded an honorary doctorate by UCC in 1993. He died in 2003 and his son, David, is a leading Senior Counsel at the Bar.

The Society is delighted to honour one of our history’s finest at this event and we invite all Law Society members to contribute and debate this Paper. Following the fallout from the Ryan and Murphy reports and the changing role of the Church in the organs of State, Irish life and education, this promises to be a very engaging and enlightening debate.

Senator Ivana Bacik is currently Reid Professor of Law at Trinity (a position held by Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese) and is a member of the Oireachtas Justice Committee. She is one of the most prominent lawyers in contemporary Ireland and is counsel in the controversial Zappone case, on appeal to the Supreme Court, which concerns the rights of same sex couples. Senator Bacik was SU President in TCD and therefore one of the defendants in the landmark case Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child (SPUC) v Grogan. She is author of ‘Kicking and Screaming: Dragging Ireland into the 21st Century’ and is a vocal figure for Atheist Ireland.
